The Maccabees rose in the second century BCE against the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had outlawed core Jewish practices and rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem. What began as a revolt led by the priest Mattathias and his son Judah became a sustained campaign of resistance. They were outnumbered and often undersupplied, yet they relied on mobility, terrain, and conviction. Their defiance was not reckless—it was rooted in identity and refusal to yield what they believed sacred.
